SOUTHOLD, NY — Southold Town officials want to help, not just seniors, but every resident who feels safer staying at home during the new coronavirus crisis.

According to Southold Town Deputy Supervisor Jill Doherty and Denis Noncarrow, government liaison coordinator, the town's community response unit is available to help all residents with deliveries and other services.

"It doesn't matter what your age or what health status is," Doherty said. "f you are fine and low risk but just want to stay home, we will shop for you."

The program is created and run by Doherty and Noncarrow, along with Karen McLaughlin, director of the town's human resource center, to offer assistance to those that are most vulnerable — as well as all residents across the board — so that they can stay home as coronavirus numbers continue to rise.

As of Tuesday, Suffolk County has a total of 28,429 cases of the new coronavirus, with 275 reported in Southold.

The town's community response unit will take on tasks such as shopping at supermarkets, going to the post office, picking up prescriptions at pharmacies and assisting with yellow bags, as well as answering questions that come up during "this challenging time," officials said.

Those interested can call the government liaison office at 631-765-5806, Noncarrow said.

Depending on need, a local organization or volunteer is sent the individual's request; local organizations and individuals are working with the town to meet needs including members of the town's various civic associations, Chambers of Commerce, Lions Clubs, and the Greenport Business Improvement District, among others.

"With many other volunteers we are serving over 150 homes in the area — and welcoming more as we go along," Noncarrow said.
