Couple Rescued After Boat Hits Rocks, Takes On Water: Police

The couple was not hurt, police say.

GREENPORT, NY — A Sayville couple was rescued Sunday after their boat hit the rocks and began taking on water in Southold Bay, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, the incident took place at 3:19 p.m. when Gary S. Ruta, 58, and Jennifer Ruta, 54, were boating in 34-foot cruiser and hit the rocks outside Brick Cove Marina in Greenport.

Their boat began taking on water and Gary Ruta notified the United States Coast Guard by VHF radio, police said.

Southold bay constables responded, helping the couple off the vessel and on to the marine unit boat, and bringing them to their dock adjacent to Brick Cove Marina; the couple was unhurt, police said.

Douglass Marine responded, took the vessel off the rocks, and towed it into Brick Cove Marina, police said.
