Cutchogue Cedars Golf Course

While I attended IONA College, I starred as a doctor in DASHES AND DOTS by Iona’s Speech and Dramatic Arts teacher Ron Villane. {As a freelance writer – I myself like to incorporate dashes and dots to add-to my writing-style.}
While I was on-shift at the Southold The Traveler-Watchman newspaper – I was honored to have the privilege to be the one who got to place the Days in Our Past columns in The Traveler Watchman newspaper.
When I do my research and do locate dated material, I do usually acknowledge the information by having typesetting them in date-order.
When I checked for CEDARS GOLF COURSE via the suffolkhistoricnewspapers website – I ended-up actually locating what was needed but I so wish to begin with this from The Long Island Traveler Mattituck Watchman dated May 13, 1976 and then I’ll proceed going-back-in-time – OK? {You’ll see why & I thank you!}
“… Golf is rapidly emerging as the most popular recreational sport on the East End and one reason for the sport’s growth has been attributed to open space, woodlands, and rolling hills adjacent to the Long Island Sound and Peconic Bays which serve as an excellent sight for golf course construction.
Secondly, the rural character of the area makes it possible for the weekend golfer to avoid the long waiting time associated with courses located closer to the metropolitan area.
Cedars Golf Course {stet}
Public course; 9 hole; 1,120 yard course with a par three; the club has a driving range, putting green, snack bar, club rentals and some golf accessories are available on the premises. Russell Case, the club’s owner, {would offer} golf lessons, and {arranged} equipment purchases; open March 1 through January 31; located at Case’s Lane, Cutchogue, and {was} landscaped to resemble some of the great 18 hole courses in Scotland. …”
The Long Island Traveler Mattituck Watchman dated May 13, 1965:
“… The Cedars Golf Course will be open to the public and offer nine holes of par 3 golf. Part of the course was formerly a sheep pasture and the natural beauty of the location {was} enriched by grading, filling and planting. …
… {The patrons could make use of} clubhouse, lockers, clubs, carts, putting green, practice fairway, {have a} golf pro, {a} teaching shed, {a} shop with equipment and refreshments. …
… {Robert Bergen and George L. Penny of Mattituck as well as Russell Case and Richard Cron of Cutchogue} were ‘understood’ {to be the} the proprietors. {stet}”
The Long Island Traveler Mattituck Watchman dated August 17, 1967 included:
“ The sun shown bright … for Sam MacKenzie as he made his first hole-in-one playing the Cedars Golf Course … with Cliff Polhemus and Bill Collins. He made the perfect shot on the fourth hole with an 8 iron. At age 82, after playing for 50 years, Sam was really overjoyed. So you see, never give up. It can happen to you. Just keeping trying. {stet}.”
The August 06 {stet}, 1970 The Long Island Traveler Mattituck Watchman Cutchogue column by Margaret Friis included: “… Another hole in one was made at Cedars Golf Course. John Zuhoski, Sr did the trick. He {said} he waited seventy years to score one. …”

Appreciation goes to John Dennison who was so-helpful with {Paul Pawlowski & Tim McManus} - the new owners of Cedars Golf Course - PLUS - Jay Dempsey for your GOLF {Gazette} column from The Suffolk Times dated April 13, 2014 that appears towards the bottom of this-so-definitely-not-so-far-from-a-missing-link {where it reads Suffolk Times Article About Cedars Golf Club on the North Fork}:
