GREENPORT, NY — Southold Town Democratic candidates in the coming election served up pancakes to the community Saturday morning to raise funds for scholarships for local high school students.

At the event, held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, guests enjoyed pancakes — blueberries were reportedly the crowd's favorite — coffee, fruit, and orange juice; the Southold Democratic Committee raised more than $1,000 on Saturday, which goes directly to two scholarships for graduating seniors, organizers said.

The scholarship is open to seniors from Mattituck, Southold, Greenport and Fishers Island, and the application requires students to reflect on how community service has impacted their growth and understanding of the world.

Submissions are due to guidance offices Friday.

“We had a great morning, and a good crowd. It’s great to be a part of a community effort that supports local students,” Greg Doroski, a candidate for Southold Town Supervisor vying against incumbent Supervisor Scott Russell in the upcoming race. “I remember as a high school senior at Mattituck High School how important these scholarships were. Every little bit makes a difference.”
