“Why We Live In Southold” – by H. Robinson Shipherd that was written by Miss Margaret Deneke of Oxford, England and Southwold, England. It is listed in the Southold Free Library Whitaker Historical Collection that the item carrying the information was made as a gift to the Whitaker Historical Collection.
Miss Margaret Deneke “visited this daughter town November 17-20, 1954 and gave a lecture-recital in the {Southold} high school. She stayed at the Howell Farm as the guest of John and Lillian Howell. Thurs. 10 A.M. Ann Currie-Bell came and they went on a sightseeing tour as follows {:} Krupski Farm for potato growing; Bingmann’s Egg Hatchery; Sand Doin’s at the Bay; Sight of Indian Neck, “Red Shutters,” name of a retired man, Dayton’s Farm in action; Paradise Point and the Yacht Club; Light House Farm, from top to bottom; Over Jockey Creek to the High School; the Old Burying Ground; the Presb. Church; Founders Landing. Lunch at Claudio’s in Greenport; on to Orient Point. Returning west by the Sound route west to see the “Old House at Cutchogue”, and around New Suffolk, then back to Peconic for tea with the Edwin {Prellwitzes} at ‘High House Josh’, and look at some old pictures. Then back to the farm to rest for piano and supper.

Friday, 11 A.M. Helen Stervitz driving four visited the Library on the way to Riverhead; lunch at Henry Perkins Hotel; then Miss Deneke’s lecture at the Congl Church before the Women’s Club their friends, for which she was paid. Tea was served at the close, then back to the farm to rest for the Deneke Recital at the High School {stet} in the evening with very bad fog. 337 tickets had been sold by the Friends of the Library at one dollar each. A reception and refreshments followed the delight ful {stet} lecture-recital, and Miss Deneke returned to New York on the early train Sat.Am. {stet} The whole affair was pronounced a great success, and everybody was happy about it. The Friends had money for hurricane damage, and they also promised to send Miss Deneke A {stet] of films to use in her lecture on ‘Southold’.
A beautiful character, a very fine musician, with a keen mind, the Community {hopes} she will come again to Southold to which on this occasion she gave her services without any reward but her good visit to the daughter town of L.I.
