NORTH FORK, NY — A four-legged friend who's spent the last eight months in a North Fork shelter is desperately a new home.

Gabrielle Stroup, director of operations at The League, which has locations in Peconic and Aquebogue, said Mathis is a 50-lb. Border collie mix. He's very good with other dogs, and has tested well with cats, she added.

"I would not see an issue with him and kids," she said.

Stroup wrote a message for Mathis: "Please don’t make me wait any longer. I’m Mathis and I’ve been in the shelter system since July — eight long months of watching families walk right by me."

She added, for Mathis: "I don’t understand why nobody wants me. I try so hard to make someone notice me. The staff asks all the time why I’m still at the shelter. Please help me get out. I’m getting sad and starting to feel very unwanted. I promise to be on my best behavior and be your best friend. Please, someone, just give me a chance."
