Drugged Driver Crashes Into Car, Flees Scene, Hits Tree: Cops

Although a drugged driver tried to flee the scene of a crash, he then struck a tree, police say.

GREENPORT, NY — A drugged driver crashed into another vehicle on Route 48 in Greenport and tried to flee the scene before hitting a tree, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, the incident took place on Friday at 8:02 p.m. when Brandon Coscia, 24, of Riverhead, was driving a 2012 Honda "at a high rate of speed," while heading east on Route 48.

Coscia struck a vehicle he'd attempted to pass at the intersection of Route 48 and Chapel Lane, police said.

Coscia left the scene and continued east on Route 48; he attempted to turn onto Main Street but failed to properly negotiate the turn and stuck a tree, police said.

Coscia was found to be operating the vehicle while impaired by drugs, police said. He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, a felony, first degree aggravated unlicensed operation, and leaving the scene of an accident, police said.

Coscia was transported to Southold Town Police headquarters, processed, and held for arraignment, police said.
