Drunk, 'Erratic' Driver Caught Using 2 Lanes: Cops

He was using both the westbound lanes on Route 48, police say.

MATTITUCK, NY — A Greenport man was arrested after he was caught driving drunk and using two lanes, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, John Joseph Tuthill, 48, was arrested on Tuesday at 10:24 a.m. on Shirley Road in Mattituck and charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.

Authorities received a report of an "erratic" driver in a gray KIA heading west on County Road 48 and failing to maintain its lane position, police said.

Southold Town Police personnel canvassed the area and were able to locate the vehicle in question; the driver was observed traveling west on County Road 48 and simultaneously using both lanes of westbound travel, police said.

A vehicle and traffic stop was conducted and Tuthill was found to be the operator of the motor vehicle; further investigation revealed that Tuthill was intoxicated, police said.

Tuthill was arrested, transported to Southold Town Police headquarters, processed, and held to await arraignment in Southold Town Justice Court, police said.
