NORTH FORK, NY — Tom Demopolous and his wife Sharon are familiar faces on the North Fork. For years, they've been seen lending a hand at events and have always opened their hearts to help neighbors in need.

And now, the tables have turned as an escalating housing crisis and a dearth of affordable rentals has left the couple struggling to find a home.

A GoFundMe page, "USA Military Veteran Suffered Stroke And In Need" was organized by Friends of Tom for Tom Demopoulos, who, along with his wife, is a longtime North Fork resident.

Demopoulos, the page said, recently suffered a stroke, is unable to work, was evicted from his home of 32 years.

He has posted on social media for months, imploring friends and contacts to reach out with leads for a home or apartment — something, anything — in a market where less than few options are available and where rents have skyrocketed and forced longtime locals out of their hometowns forever.

His wife is battling a serious illness and recent hospitalization, the page said.

"Any funds we raise will go toward rent, groceries, and medical bills. If you can contribute a small donation to help this veteran and his family stay afloat, it would mean the world to him. Please consider assisting a local veteran or military family in need," the page said.
