'Erratic Driver' Charged With DWI On North Fork: Police

CUTCHOGUE, NY — A Mattituck man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated in Cutchogue Sunday, police said.

According to Southold Town police, the incident took place on Route 48 at 8:32 p.m. Melvin Santos Gomez, 19, was arrested and charged with DWI, first offense; driving on the shoulders/slopes; driving while using a mobile phone; moving from lane unsafely; driving without a license; operating a motor vehicle with .08 of 1 percent, first offense; and drinking alcohol in a motor vehicle on a highway, police said.

Officers responded to a report of an erratic driver on County Route 48 heading westbound in a gray Dodge Dakota pickup truck, police said. Officers located the vehicle and attempted to conduct a vehicle and traffic stop for violations, but Santos Gomez refused to pull over and continued driving westbound for another three miles at a slow speed with officers behind him, police said.

He was eventually stopped on Pike Street in Mattituck and officers identified Santos Gomez as the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, police said.

Santos Gomez was found to be intoxicated and was place under arrest; he was taken to police headquarters and held for arraignment, police said.
