Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge: An Urban National ParkIn spite of being right next to one of the most heavily populated regions of the United States and one of the busiest airports in the world, Jamaica Bay is home to an extremely diverse population of  wildlife. In addition to the 330 species of birds that have been recorded here, there are also over 100 species of finfish, as well as native reptiles, amphibians, small mammals, over 60 species of butterflies and one of the largest populations of horseshoe crabs in the Northeast..
Please join us for an evening with "Jamaica Bay Guardian" Don Riepe, who recently retired from the National Park Service where he worked as a naturalist and manager of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. This program includes photos documenting birds and other wildlife as well as resource management activities undertaken over the past 30 years. Don has been involved in managing the refuge for raptors ( ospreys, peregrines, barn owls ), butterflies & moths, grassland birds and is a member of the Jamaica Bay Task Force. His program will also include his thoughts on habitat management and some of the many environmental issues surrounding Jamaica Bay.
