NFAS GENERAL MONTHY MEETING

Friday, April 13th, 7:30 pm Restoring American Kestrels ( Sparrow Hawk s ) in New York State The Red House at Inlet Pond County Park, 65275 Route 48, Greenport, NY

Across New York state, people have been coming together to saw wood, hammer nails, and peer into boxes. They've been working on an ongoing project meant to slow the decline of breeding American Kestrels in NYS. Breeding pairs of American Kestrels, North America's smallest falcon, have declined significantly in New York in the past 20 years, in part to the impact of habitat loss and competition for nest cavities from other birds, like the non-native European Starling.  While kestrels are not abundant on the North Fork, they are by no means rare. When perching on a telephone wire, this beautiful little raptor can often be mistaken for a mourning dove when viewed from afar, so you may have seen one without even knowing it.

Come and learn more about American Kestrels,  and how you can help them to thrive on the North Fork.
