North Fork Audubon endangered species program

The following are two learning sessions related to the Endangered Species Program (ESP) we conduct every spring and summer for Piping Plovers and Least Terns. It's a great opportunity for young people or people of any age to get involved in " hands on - citizen science ".
The first is a meeting to learn about the program, the birds and responsibilities of volunteering and to meet other volunteers. In other words the theory of it all.
The second is an in the field learning experience of what to expect on the beach as you interact with the Plovers and Terns. Or this time the practice of it all.
After attending a person should be well motivated to await the spring arrival of  the birds.

Yes, it’s true. The plovers are indeed coming. Beginning in March, plovers land on our beaches scouting out favorable nesting sites, and NFAS begins another year of protecting, and gathering important data on, these endangered birds.

On Wednesday, March 23 at 7 PM we will have a special meeting for folks who want to learn more about these birds, and what they can do to help ensure that plovers are a part of The North Fork’s natural history for many years to come.

This meeting is also an opportunity for folks who have volunteered in past years to get together and talk about past plover experiences, and to gear up for the 2011 season.

As I have said in the past, “I can think of a no more rewarding experience than helping to protect an endangered specie”.

Volunteer String Fencing DayLocation: Meet at Breakwater Beach in MattituckSaturday, April 02, 2011, 9:00 PM

The North Fork Audubon Society and the NYS DEC will be prefencing two piping plover and least tern nesting sites and we'll need as much help as we can get.

The fencing we put up is crucial to the survival of these endangered and threatened birds. Why not pitch in to make this nesting season a successful one!

If you have an hour or two to spare to help with this endeavor please call Tom Damiani, North Fork Audubon Society's Tern and Plover Steward at (632) 275-3202 or email him at tdamiani3@optimum.net.
