ORIENT POINT, NY — Caring passengers, as well as Cross Sound Ferry staff, came to the aid of a young mother who had a medical emergency Sunday while traveling alone with her three young children, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, the incident took place at 11:26 a.m.; police and the Orient Fire Department responded to the Cross Sound Ferry for a medical service call. While Orient Fire Department EMTs were assessing the woman, her young children were being taken care of by Cross Sound Ferry staff and Brian and Lauren Quinn, a couple that saw the incident occur, police said.

The Quinns, who were on vacation with their own young children, "put their plans on hold and came to the assistance of the mother and her children," police said.

Orient Fire Department EMTs treated and transported the mother to Eastern Long Island Hospital for further medical care, police said.

Meanwhile, Brian and Lauren Quinn "bonded with the children and offered to take the other mother’s vehicle and her children to the hospital, which the mother allowed," police said. "Once at the hospital Brian and Lauren set up games and read stories to the children to keep the children calm and happy, while their mother was being treated. Brian and Lauren stayed with children until their mother was released from the hospital."
