Firefighters Race To Tackle Blaze In Mattituck Home

At least one dog is believed to have died in the fire, Mattituck Fire Chief James Rugnetta says.

MATTITUCK, NY — Firefighters rushed to the scene of a blaze at a home in Mattituck Tuesday night.

According to Mattituck Fire Chief James Rugnetta, the fire began in a home on Legion Avenue at 7:22 p.m.

From behind a knee wall in the corner of the second floor, it spread up through the rafters. The upper portion of the home was badly damaged in the fire, he said. Firefighters found heavy smoke upon arrival and fought the blaze "aggressively."

At least one family dog is believed to have died in the fire. Another family dog was rescued, Rugnetta said.

No one was injured, Southold Town Police said.

The fire does not appear to be suspicious; Suffolk County Police Arson Squad responded to determine the cause of the fire, police said.

The fire self-vented and firefighters also worked to vent the fire through the roof and knock down the blaze, Rugnetta said.

Jamesport Fire Department was on standby, Cutchogue Fire Department responded to the scene, and Southold Fire Department was at the Mattituck Firehouse while Mattituck Fire Department raced to the fire, according to Rugnetta.

Mattituck Fire Department cordoned off the area and directed traffic.
