Firefighters Rush To Extinguish Jamesport Blaze

The fire badly damaged a home but no injuries were reported, police say.

JAMESPORT, NY — First responders raced to the scene of a fire that ripped through a home on Main Road in Jamesport Saturday afternoon.

Jamesport Fire Department, as well as Cutchogue, Mattituck, Southold and Riverhead and Wading River Fire Departments responded to battle the fire, which broke out just before 3 p.m. at a home near Herricks Lane.

A Riverhead police officer at the scene said no serious injuries were reported; one person was taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, a first responder at the scene said.

Police at the scene said an accident at the same time was reported on Route 48, with one person airlifted via Suffolk County aviation.

The fire and accident led to road closures and traffic being re-routed on a day when motorists had reported heavy gridlock due to a number of festivals and fairs on the North Fork.
