It was a day to remember for the excited first graders from Westhampton Beach who picked apples and pumpkins on the North Fork recently.
CUTCHOGUE, NY — It was a day for making memories Friday as first graders from Meaghan Moran's class at Westhampton Beach Elementary School headed to Wickham's Fruit Farm in Cutchogue for apple and pumpkin picking.
The kids were delighted with the apples and pumpkin and also, with a tractor ride through the lush fields under a sparkling, vast October sky.
The class trip is an annual favorite, Moran said. "It enriches the curriculum gets the students out into the community to do an event with their classmates."

Being able to experience the farm is a wonderful experience, Moran said, especially for some children who might not have the opportunity to visit on their own.
Classroom lessons come alive as kids pick apples and pumpkins and see firsthand where the food they eat is grown, Moran said.

"We learn about the life cycles of apples and pumpkins and it all comes together," she said.
And, she added, the trip gives parents and grandparents a chance to make precious memories with their children. "It builds on the home-school connection for parents to come on the field trip and be a part of the learning," she said.
