~ Genealogy... Well... Just-in-"Case"...

ALFRED C {CASE} SIMONS was a member of the SOUTHOLD FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH board of trustees, a watchmaker, ran the taxi service in Southold, was a direct descendant of BARNABAS HORTON, and was a personal friend of HELEN KELLER. {They apparently knew the CUSTERs - and MR SIMONS was ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL's helper who received the first phone call in history.}

The Long Island Traveler dated October 27, 1893 shared information about the “Unveiling of the Founders Monument” that was erected within the property of the Southold First Presbyterian Church Cemetery under CHAIRMAN THE REVEREND EPHER WHITAKER -AND- one of the ushers of the event was ALFRED C. {CASE} SIMONS.

The Long Island Traveler dated January 8, 1897 included various highlights of a Southold First Presbyterian Church Meeting: “… Mr. Alfred C. Simons, Superintendent, reported on the Sunday school, and called especial attention to its free and valuable library, adapted to persons of every stage of life, and rich in history. Biography, travels, missions, explorations, biblical research, topography and fiction. … Mr. Alfred C. Simons and Miss Martha A. Wells were appointed a committee to ascertain what contributions the members of the church would pledge themselves for the expenses of the present year.

There is a 1907 list of original subscribers of the Southold Lighting Company AND the entry of A. C. Simons happens to be among those listed as a Southold Lighting Company original subscriber by purchasing stock in the Company.

The Long Island Traveler dated February 14, 1935 included the fact that local Southold’s JOHN ELBERT SWEZEY had succumbed after effects of a fall AND ALFRED C. {CASE} SIMONS was entered as being one of Mr. Swezey’s pallbearers PLUS being a member of Mr. Swezey’s Bible Class.

The Long Island Traveler-Mattituck Watchman dated November 11, 1943 included the obituary of ALFRED C. {CASE}: “{He} died at his home in Southold, on Saturday, November 6th, following an illness of several months. {He| was born in Southold on March 11, 1868, the son of the late William Smith and Elizabeth Simons.” He had lived in Southold his entire life.”According to that obituary: Mr. Simons worked as a clerk for “James B. Fanning and Charles E. Case.”

The Suffolk County news dated November 25, 1943 included the probate will of Alfred C. Simons: He left an estate valued at “between $5,000 and $10,000, all personal property.”
