Greenport Man Busted With Open Tequila Bottle In Car: Police

He was seen putting his empty beer can on the ground in the IGA parking lot, police say.

GREENPORT, NY — A Greenport man was arrested after he was caught with an open bottle of tequila in his car, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, Alfred Welch, 61, was arrested on Sunday at 1:10 a.m. on Third Street in Greenport and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation, a misdemeanor, as well as having an open alcoholic beverage and an expired inspection, police said.

An officer observed Welch place an empty beer can on the ground in the parking lot of the IGA while driving through, police said.

Welch was stopped and a DMV check showed that his privilege to operate a motor vehicle in the State of New York was suspended, police said.

Once the driver's door was opened, the officer saw that there was an open bottle of tequila in plain view, police said.

Welch arrested and transported to Southold Police headquarters where he was processed and released on $250 bail and issued an appearance ticket for a later court date, police said.
