Greenport Movie Theater Could Be Open Weekends Year-Round: Mayor
BREAKING: Mayor George Hubbard said he's discussed keeping the movie theater open on Friday and Saturday nights year-round with the owner.

GREENPORT, NY — Greenport could soon see its only movie theater open year round, at least on the weekends.
Residents have long said they miss the Village Cinema, located on Front Street, when it closes for the season each year.
And now, Greenport Village Mayor George Hubbard said, that could change: Hubbard, during a State of the Town and Village address — presented at Peconic Landing recently with Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell — said he'd discussed the idea with Josh Sapan, the owner of the theater.

The goal could be to create sponsorship opportunities, where patrons could buy memberships to the theater, helping the doors to remain open, at least on Friday and Saturday nights, year round.
The crowd at Peconic Landing broke out into applause at the idea.

"He just wants to break even," Hubbard said, of Sapan, adding that he was "working with him" to explore possibilities.
Having the movie theater open on the weekends would offer families entertainment options during the winter months, he said. "It would mean something else to do around here besides bars and restaurants," Hubbard said.
Sapan told Patch that he would love to keep the theater open year round. "As long as I can cover the expenses of heat, insurance, and management, I would be delighted," he said.
