Greenporters Open Hearts To Man Who Urgently Needs Surgery

Without surgery, he might lose use of one of his hands, and be unable to even write again in the future.

GREENPORT, NY — Once again, the North Fork community is coming together to help a friend in need. Emily Kessler has kicked off a GoFundMe page, "Nico Needs Surgery/Necesita Cirugia," for a young man who could lose use of his hand forever.

The page has garnered $1,250 of its $3,500 goal.

"Two weeks ago Nico started experiencing scary episodes of losing consciousness," the page reads. "During one of these episodes he landed on his arm and broke it. We found this out after he was rushed to Stony Brook, where we stayed for a week getting neurological and cardiac monitoring. He was diagnosed with complex migraines."

But that wasn't all.

"Along with the medical care he received, we have been told he needs a complicated surgery or he will never have function of his hand again — meaning, without surgery, he will never be able to even write with or use his dominant hand. We were able to apply for emergency coverage for the hospital but unfortunately we are not covered for the hand surgery as it is considered an out-patient procedure," the page said.

"We have an incredible doctor — the chief of hand surgery at NYU — who is willing to not only do the surgery, but donate his time. The problem is that we still need to pay for the screws he needs for his wrist along with the facility fee and anesthesia. This is where we are hoping the generosity of our friends and family can bridge the gap and help us get Nico the help he desperately needs. Please donate as well as spread the word to loved ones as this surgery needs to happen quickly, in the next two weeks."

Both thanked the community for their love and support.
