Robert Simonson typically has his "A Beer At" column on-board EATER STAFF online spotlighting New York City. He went to "the east end of Long Island, to the North Fork, where the wonderfully named Whiskey Wind Tavern has been comforting old Greenport salts for three quarters of a century" for his column of September 2, 2011.
This is my take on Robert Simonson's take on Greenport's Whiskey Wind Tavern.
Greenport's Whiskey Wind Tavern's old wooden bar "{w/ {a} round-framed mirror in the middle of which evokes a ship's wheel" "was installed by Bill Worth in 1940, when he founded the joint as Bill Worth's Rendezvou s." "Locals {now have} pool, foosball, a jukebox and a line of draft." "The tavern {was} open until til 2 am..." {Hours now are Monday - Sunday Noon - Midnight w/ a Limited Menu after 9 pm.} "The odd name, by the way, supposedly harkens back to the days when fisherman {STET} would wait out hurricanes or nor'easters—called "whiskey winds"—in their local saloon."
SUFFOLKTIMES.COM {dated} OCTOBER 5, 2023 shared BY CONTRIBUTING EDITOR CHRIS FRANCESCANI on page 3 then continued on page 24 that PAUL MONAHAN and MIKE ROSE who are{t}wo of the {WHISKEY WIND} tavern’s several new owners “told village trustees and Mayor {KEVIN STUESSI} that they intended to {carry-on}the tradition of running the tavern as a self-described ‘dive bar’ {meaning} laid back, welcoming and serving inexpensive drinks.”
PAUL MONAHAN “moved to Greenport to start some beverage alcohol businesses [with] {stet} some friend and I came and fell in love with Greenport and we opened a distillery {he and others opened MATCHBOOK DISTILLING COMPANY on Corwin Street in Greenport in 2017}.
MIKE ROSE “has been living and working in Southold since 2019 and is the proprietor of Bogie’s {STET should be BOGEY’s - not like HUMPHREY BOGART !} Bottled Goods, a liquor store on Main Road.”
