Injuries Reported In Two Car Crash At Deadly Intersection

An accident at a site at least one resident calls "Dead Man's curve" sent two to the hospital Tuesday.

MATTITUCK, NY — A two-car crash on Love Lane Tuesday morning sent at least one man to the hospital with injuries, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, the crash took place at 7:55 a.m. at the intersection of Route 25 and Love Lane in Mattituck. Donald J. Mott, 70, of Bay Shore, was driving a 2014 Chevy van and attempting to make a left turn onto Love Lane from New York State Route 25. Mott collided with Austin W. Tuthill, 23, of Cutchogue, who was driving a 2012 Chevy pickup west on Route 25, police said.

The collision caused Tuthill's vehicle to subsequently collide with a utility pole at the intersection, police said.

Tuthill was treated and transported to a Eastern Long Island Hospital by Mattituck Fire Department for non-life threatening injuries; no charges were filed, police said.

The intersection has been the scene of a number of serious accidents in recent years and has sparked the Mattituck-Laurel Civic Association to cry out for a traffic study; funding was secured in recent months for that study.
