'Little Libraries' Unveiled In Greenport This Week

Little libraries and a bookmobile will help foster literacy and a lifelong love of reading for Greenport kids this summer.

GREENPORT, NY — Nothing's better than a North Fork summer, fresh, sweet corn, lazy beach days — and a good book.

With an eye toward nurturing a love of reading, for the second year in a row, Greenport Schools, the Floyd Memorial Library and the Village of Greenport are teaming up on an initiative to provide books for kids.

Joseph Tsaveras, Greenport Elemenatary School principal, will spearhead the Greenport Bookmobile with reading teacher Amy Gammon.

The Bookmobile provides access to free books delivered throughout the district during the summer.

This year, the school district has worked with Greenport Village Mayor George Hubbard and Village Trustee Jack Martilotta to fund the construction of "Greenport Little Free Libraries."

Poppy Johnson, assistant library director at the Floyd Memorial Public Library, will donate books and help maintain the "little libraries" as a way to promote literacy. Tech teacher Mike Davies constructed the little libraries, Greenport Schools Superintendent David Gamberg said.

The "little libraries" are slated to be unveiled this week.
