NORTH FORK, NY — A photo can save a shelter dog's life. Just ask Gabrielle Stroup of the North Fork Animal Welfare League in Peconic, an ardent animal lover and talented photographer who has featured homeless pets' photos and stories on social media for years to help find them forever homes.

Now, Stroup has entered the"One Picture Saves A Life" photo contest, sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health USA Inc. and GreaterGood.org, to help make a difference in the lives of animals still waiting for their chance at adoption.

Stroup entered the contest with two photos of Cinnie, a dog who lived at the shelter for more than five years before she was found by her forever family.

"I used Cinnie's photos because she was here for so long. In that first photo, you can see how sad she was. Then the second photo is actually the one that got her adopted," Stroup said. "You can see her smile."

Cinnie was one of Stroup's favorite longtime shelter residents. "She was one of the smartest dogs!" Stroup said. "Sadly, Cinnie passed away recently, after two amazing years with her family. I think this would be an awesome tribute to her — if we could win with her photo."

Cinnie's photo made the contest's Top 25. The public is asked to vote daily through March 13 for their favorite entry. Those voting are also asked to share their favorites on social media to help them win.

The winner will be announced on March 14, and the winning shelter will receive a visit from Underwater Dogs photographer Seth Casteel for an in-person training for staff and volunteers.

"There were so many entrants in the beginning I didn't think I had a chance," Stroup said. "I was super excited to get into the final 25!"
