Local Deli Staff Opens Hearts To Help Bring Christmas To Needy

Wendy Zuhoski has a heart of gold and is collecting gift cards so local families will have joyful Christmas holidays in their homes.

MATTITUCK, NY — Wendy's Deli in Mattituck is more than just a well-loved eatery where scores of North Fork residents head for mouthwatering sandwiches and other savory delights.

Wendy Zuhoski, who owns the deli, has dedicated her life to giving back to the community, hosting countless fundraisers for families in need. And now, she's on a mission to make sure those struggling this holiday season have what they need to make Christmas special.

Zuhoski began with an open letter to the community, announcing that she was searching for families. "The holiday season is here. This can be a difficult time of year, especially for those in need," she wrote. "The stress of the season can be a lot for anyone to handle. We are looking to assist a few families with genuine needs this holiday season."

To that end, Zuhoski wrote, she and her staff are looking to provide Christmas dinner, as well as toys and clothes.

"We are looking for local families, elderly people, those who have lost jobs, single parents, and anyone that might be struggling," she said. "A helping hand is available so that your family or a family you know that is in need can enjoy this holiday season. Please spread the word to families in need in our community so that they can have the Christmas they deserve."

Zuhoski created a "Magic of Christmas" box in the deli, located by the newspapers, where customers were able to drop a family's name, and a brief description of their need and ages; all families and donations will be kept anonymous, she said.

So far, Zuhoski said they have the names of about 10 families.

Now, she's reached out for donations of gift cards; the goal is to deliver them about two weeks before Christmas so families can shop themselves for their own needs and gifts.

"Christmas is personal. It's not always about the toys. These families need more than toys. Food, clothes, shoes, personal belongings, household supplies — whatever they need to make this Christmas special," Zuhoski wrote.

Gift cards for businesses including Walmart, Target, Amazon, Tanger, Toys "R" Us, Panera, Dunkin' Donuts and CVS, as well as Mastercard and Visa gift cards, are being collected.

"Thanks once again for all of your help. You are the ones that make all this happen. Here's to happier holidays!" Zuhoski wrote.
