Man Arrested After Breaking Into Southold Home, Stealing Food — And Then, Hiding In Boiler Room: Police

The homeowner told police that there was an unknown vehicle parked in his driveway and a person might be inside, authorities say.

SOUTHOLD, NY — A Yonkers man was arrested after breaking into a Southold home, stealing food, and hiding inside the boiler room, police said.

According to Southold Town police, the incident happened on Friday at 4:09 p.m. Officers responded to a residence on the North Road in Southold for a report from the homeowner that an unknown vehicle was parked behind his residence and a person may be inside, police said.

Officers checked the residence and found a back door unlocked; upon searching the inside of the house, they located a man hiding inside the boiler room, police said.

The man was identified as Robert Mahoney, 49; it was determined that he had broken into the house through an unlocked window the night prior and stolen food belonging to the homeowners, police said.

Mahoney was arrested, transported to Southold Town police headquarters, charged with felony burglary and petty larceny, processed, and held pending arraignment at Southold Town Justice Court, police said.
