Man Charged With DWI After Crash: Cops

The Cutchogue man was arrested in Laurel, police say.

LAUREL, NY — A Cutchogue man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after a Laurel crash Friday night, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, the incident took place at 11:49 p.m. on Peconic Bay Blvd. when William Velez, 58, was involved in the motor vehicle crash.

An officer responded and interviewed Velez; the officer noticed that Velez's breath smelled of an alcoholic beverage, he was unsteady on his feet and his eyes were red and glassy, police said.

Velez failed standard field sobriety tests administered at the scene, was arrested, and charged with operating a motor vehicle with .08 of 1% alcohol, first, and driving while intoxicated, first offense, police said.

Velez was transported to Southold Town Police headquarters, processed and held pending arraignment in Southold Town Justice Court, police said.
