Man Charged With DWI After Driving Into Water: Police

The East Hampton man was treated for exposure to the cold water, police said.

SHELTER ISLAND, NY — An East Hampton man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated on Shelter Island Friday after he drove into the water in his vehicle, police said.

According to Shelter Island Police, Aldredo A. Merat ,60, was arrested at 12:33 p.m. and charged with DWI and moving from lane unsafely.

Police said they were called to the scene of a vehicle submerged in the water and determined Merat to be intoxicated. He was taken to police headquarters, where it was determined that he needed medical attention, police said. Shelter Island Town EMS responded and took Merat to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital for treatment of exposure to the cold water, police said.

He was later arraigned at Shelter Island Justice Court, released on his own recognizance, and is slated to appear back in court at a later date, police said.
