Man Crashes Into Pole, Charged With DWI: Police

The crash led to an almost 10-hour road closure in Greenport, police say.

GREENPORT, NY — A Greenport man was charged with driving while intoxicated after he crashed into a utility pole early Sunday, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, the single car crash took place at 4:51 a.m. on Route 48; Jose Agustin Gomez, 21, struck a PSEG pole, causing it to break and fall in the roadway, police said. The roadway was closed between Moores Lane and Chapel Lane for almost 10 hours, police said.

Upon investigation Agustin-Gomez had the odor of an alcohol beverage, his eyes were bloodshot and glassy, and he was unsteady on his feet, police said. He was found to be intoxicated, arrested, and charged with driving while intoxicated, first offense, and operating an unregistered vehicle, police said.

He was taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital by Greenport Fire Department Ambulance for a complaint of leg and hip pain resulting from the crash, then transported to Southold Police headquarters, processed, and held for arraignment, police said. PSEG responded, fixed the pole and reopened the roadway at 2:45 p.m., police said.
