Man Found Sleeping In Car, Engine Running, Charged With DWI: PD

He was charged with misdemeanor DWI, police say.

GREENPORT, NY — A man found sleeping in his vehicle with the engine running and the key in the ignition in Greenport was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, Hector Melgar, 50, of Greenport, was arrested on Tuesday at 9:04 p.m. on Front Street and charged with misdemeanor DWI, operating a vehicle without insurance, and having a suspended registration.

While on routine patrol an officer observed the vehicle parked on Front Street with Melgar, who had the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, police said. Melgar, the only person in the vehicle, submitted to several roadside sobriety tests, on which he performed poorly, police said.

Melgar was arrested, transported to Southold Town Police headquarters, processed, and held for morning arraignment, police said.
