Police ID Man Injured After SUV Careens Into Greenport Cemetery

GREENPORT, NY — A man was injured after his SUV careened into a cemetery in Greenport Tuesday, knocking down a fence and careening into headstones, police said.

Timoteo Velasques Ramires, 50, of Greenport, was driving the vehicle; witnesses at the scene reported seeing the SUV traveling at "a high rate of speed" on Third Street, police said.

The single-car crash took place at 6:32 p.m. at the intersection of Third and Webb Streets, at the Greenhill Cemetery; Velasques Ramires crashed through the wooden fence and into a large monument, police said.

Only the driver was in the vehicle; he was taken by Greenport ambulance to Eastern Long Island Hospital for treatment of injuries, although it was not immediately clear how serious his injuries were, police said. He was later transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.

Some neighbors on Third Street after the crash said they had heard the loud crash from inside their homes.
