Mattituck High School Wrestler Wins State Championship

MATTITUCK, NY — A Mattituck High School senior is ending his time at the school as a winner: Joseph Sparacio recently won the wrestling state championship in Albany.

He is no stranger to victory, the districts said: Joseph is a four-time county wrestling champion and made his third appearance this winter in the New York State Wrestling Championship.

Wrestling at the 132-pounds weight class, Joseph went 35 to 0 this season has an overall career record of 147 to 22. He was awarded the championship medal in Albany on Feb. 26.

Joseph is only the fifth wrestler in Mattituck-Cutchogue School District history to have achieved the monumental goal, the district said.

In addition to earning the title of state champion, Joseph has decided to continue his wrestling career on the college level and has accepted a Division I wrestling scholarship to Hofstra University.

When asked what is the best thing about being a state champion? Joseph reflected: “Just saying you are number one in New York State.”
