Mattituck Native Dies After Being Struck By Train in Southampton: MTA

BREAKING: John Moore, a graduate of Mattituck High School, died early Saturday, according to the MTA.

A Mattituck High School graduate died after being struck by a Long Island Rail Road train in Southampton early Saturday, according to an MTA spokesperson.

John L. Moore, III, 48, of Riverhead, was killed at 1:45 a.m. Saturday, according to MTA spokesperson Meredith Daniels.

An engineer on the 12:32 a.m. equipment train "observed a male lying across the tracks. He sounded his horn and applied his emergency brake but was unable to avoid hitting him. The man made no effort to get out of the way of the train," Daniels said.

Moore died at the Tuckahoe Road rail road crossing, she said, which is the third crossing west of the Southampton LIRR station.

A wake for John Moore, a graduate of Mattituck High School's Class of 1986, will be held Thursday, October 27 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a funeral to follow on Friday, October 28 at 11 a.m. both at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck.

The 3:07 a.m. passenger train from Speonk to Montauk was subsequently cancelled as police investigated the scene; passengers were taken by bus to their respective stops, she said.
