MATTITUCK, NY — Mattituck High School rising senior Trevor Fitzgerald was selected to attend the prestigious "Boys State" leadership action program of the American Legion this summer, school officials said.

The program, which is open to qualified male high school juniors, provides attendees with the opportunity to participate in a practical government course designed to provide them with working knowledge of the structure of government and how they can contribute to its success, the Mattituck-Cutchogue School District said.

During the program, Trevor connected with people his age from across the country while serving as the state's senators and helping to build the federal government, district officials siad.

Prior to his arrival, he had to author a bill to propose at the Senate — he chose to write about regulating salinity levels in coastal farmland soil, school officials said.

"During my time at Boys' State, I served as the Senate Majority Whip, and had the opportunity to draft and support legislation," said Trevor. "I was then elected by my county — there are 10 total, each comprising around 60 people — to interview with nine other delegates. I was then selected to be one of two in the entire program to go to Boys' Nation."

"I have never had a cadet selected before," said Major William Grigonis, the district’s ROTC instructor. "Trevor is an amazing young man."
