Mattituck Students Draw Portraits For Children In Malawi Through 'Memory Project'

MATTITUCK, NY — The Mattituck Jr.-Sr. High School Art Honor Society and Portfolio Club "continued a long-standing commitment to global kindness through participation in the Memory Project," the district said.

According to the Mattituck-Cutchogue Union Free School District, for the 12th year, the student-artists created hand-drawn portraits for children in Malawi — one of the most financially disadvantaged countries in the world.

"Through the Memory Project, children facing substantial life challenges can see themselves portrayed in a work of art," the district said. "Most of the children have never had access to a photograph of themselves, nor have they traveled outside of their villages."

Teacher Dina Rose said the project reflects a deep and ongoing dedication to using art as a bridge between cultures and a source of joy and connection.

"The students involved are proud of this tradition and fully intend to continue the project in the years ahead," Rose said.
