Mayday Call From Harbor Sparks Search: Police

The United States Coast Guard reported a mayday call in Cutchogue Harbor Saturday, police say.

CUTCHOGUE, NY — A mayday call in Cutchogue Harbor sparked an intensive search Saturday, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, the incident took place at 4:44 p.m. in Cutchogue Harbor when the Coast Guard received a mayday call on VHF Channel 16 with a location possibly in Peconic Bay within the harbor.

The USCG asked if Southold bay constables would assist in a search of the area; no boat information or information about individuals possibly aboard the vessel was known at the time of the request for search, police said.

Southold bay constables, the Southold Police Department and the United States Coast Guard, along with the Mattituck and Cutchogue Fire Departments, also assisted in the search, with negative results, police said. Sector Long Island Sound called off the search, police said.
