Missing LI Woman, 79, Located In Maryland After Desperate Search Spans 3 States, 24 Hours: Police

License plate recognition was used to track her journey from New York, to New Jersey, to Maryland — 300+ miles away, police say.

ORIENT, NY — After a desperate search that spanned three states and 24 hours, an Orient woman is home safe, police said.

According to Southold Town police, Judith Hudson was found safe on March 28, at 2:16 p.m.

The journey began when Jane Hudson, 79, arrived at the Village Lane home of her twin sister.

Jane arrived in Orient to find that her sister, who suffers from dementia and another medical condition, was not home; she had been slated to go to Stony Brook University Hospital but never arrived, police said.

Through the use of license plate recognition, Judith's vehicle was observed leaving Southold Town at about 10:15 a.m.

The LPR also captured her vehicle in a township in New Jersey around 4:30 p.m., police said.

Judith's phone was not powered on; it was later discovered that she was in possession of her partner's Apple watch, police said.

Jane and the Southold Town Police Department's detective division began receiving location updates, police said.

State police were notified, as well as several New Jersey police departments, in an to attempt to locate Judith's vehicle, police said.

Judith eventually crossed back into New York and drove around Brooklyn for several hours, staying one step ahead of notified NYPD precincts, police said.

Judith then headed south to the area of Montgomery County in Maryland, police said.

Trooper Syd Sarrichio of Maryland State Police and Sgt. Brewer of the Montgomery County Police Department joined efforts and "flooded the area with patrol units," police. said.

After driving for 24 hours, Judith was safely located near Silver Spring, MD — a distance of more than 300 miles away — by the Montgomery County Police Department, police said. She was brought to nearby hospital for evaluation, police said.

Jane traveled to Maryland and was reunited with her twin sister at the hospital, police said.
