More Thank 6K Still Without Power Across LI Monday Morning: PSEG

LONG ISLAND, NY — More than 6,000 remained without power Monday morning after the weekend's fierce nor'easter brought high winds, coastal flooding, and heavy rain to Long Island.

According to the PSEG Long Island outage map, as of 5:40 a.m., 6,736 remained without power across Long Island and the Rockaways.

PSEG Long Island gave an update Sunday night, which said that heavy rain and strong winds, including gusts of more than 70 mph, had downed more than 1,150 trees, nearly 700 large branches, and wires and poles, causing more than 119,000 outages across Long Island and the Rockaways since 7 a.m. Friday.

As of 9 p.m., PSEG Long Island has restored power to nearly 112,000 customers affected by the storm.

The vast majority of the customers currently affected lost power on Sunday, PSEG Long Island said, adding that the majority of customers who lost power prior to 4 p.m. Sunday were expected to have their service restored by the end of the day Monday.

The hardest hit areas were in Suffolk County and in Oyster Bay, PSEG Long Island said.

Additional outages were possible overnight Sunday as more wind and rain was expected, PSEG Long Island said.

PSEG Long Island said there were more than 1,350 personnel restoring power to customers affected by the coastal storm, including 850 local lineworkers, tree trimmers, surveyors, and other field personnel and more than 500 off-Island workers.

On Sunday night, PSEG Long Island said crews would continue to work safely to restore power as quickly as possible, in 16-hour shifts, until all outages were restored.

PSEG Long Island customers who are currently experiencing outages will continue to receive targeted communications about their restoration, representatives said.

To ensure the safety of personnel in bucket trucks, strong winds may temporarily slow restoration efforts.

As electric service crews continue to assess damage, estimated times of restoration (ETRs) will be provided and refined.

"PSEG Long Island recognizes that being without power for any length of time is a hardship and appreciates customers’ patience and understanding as crews work to restore electric service," PSEG Long Island said.

Customer safety

• Downed wires should always be considered "live," PSEG Long Island said. Stay as far away as possible from them, and if possible keep others, children, and pets away from the wire. Do not drive over or stand near any downed wire. To report a downed wire, call PSEG Long Island’s 24-hour electric service number at 800-490-0075 or call 911.
• Electric current passes easily through water. If you encounter a pool of standing water, stop, back up and choose another path.
• Never use a generator or any gasoline-powered engine inside your home, basement, or garage or less than 20 feet from any window, door, or vent. Use an extension cord that is more than 20 feet long to keep the generator at a safe distance.
