PECONIC, NY — It was a ceremony marked by solemn respect, tears and memories Monday as the community came together to join hands and hearts and mark 16 years since 9/11 changed the world forever.
"Remember 9/11", a ceremony organized by Southold Town's 9/11 Committee and the Southold Town Fire Chiefs Council, unfolded at Jean Cochran Park on Peconic Lane in Peconic, with a special ceremony to honor all six North Fork fire departments.
There were 2,958 flags at the park in memory of all the lives lost that day — and all, from young to old, carefully placed the flags, watching as they waved gently under the blue September sky.
