New Greenport Community Association Taking Shape

"We will gather and share the qualities we cherish about living here — and what could make life even better." — Penelope Rudder.

GREENPORT, NY — A new community association is taking shape to help examine the issues facing Greenport residents and to open up a dialogue among residents and friends.

On Saturday, Jan. 12, the first meeting of the Greenport Community Association will take place at the Floyd Memorial Library, located at 539 1st St. in Greenport, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m..

"We are kicking off the new year with a community conversation about forming a Greenport Community Association, a dream several of us have wanted to do," said Penelope Rudder, who's helped to shape the idea. "All who live in Greenport are invited to come and we will gather and share the qualities we cherish about living here and what could make life even better, especially by a group like this."

The goal, Rudder added, is for individuals to share both what they love and what they need, with an eye toward building together for all, in a series of "Community Conversations."

Issues to be discussed include quality of life concerns, including noise, beautification, a dog run, a swimming pool, and welcoming new residents; the environment; neighbors in need; affordable housing; partnering with other hamlets toward common goals; and many more.

"This started from a 'Wish List' conversation Randy Wade and I had this past summer sitting on a park bench in Mitchell Park," Rudder said. "We both felt a need for such a group, shared this with a few wonderfully supportive people who have given their insightful guidance."
