Here's some news not-so-out-of-"site" from the North Fork Community {NFCT} website: " Due to the ongoing situation with COVID-19, North Fork Community Theatre has suspended its productions of the spring musical The Producers and the Youth on Stage summer musical The Pajama Game. Please stay safe, take care of yourselves and look forward to when we can all be together again."
My "take" on the NFCT
The North Fork Community Theatre is a little piece of heaven right in our own backyard in Mattituck. The roots of the NFCT can be traced to an “Orient Play Shop.” Soon afterwards, an ad in The Suffolk Times was answered by a small group of people interested in starting an amateur theatre. Greenport School residents and faculty plus other North Fork citizens organized The Man Who Came To Dinner and the show was put on in the Greenport High School. After the Greenport High School stage was used for a while, Poquatuck Hall in Orient became the location for more productions. One of the NFCT founders, Sydney Breese Jr., recalled that in the fall of 1961, the NFCT “hit the big time.” The article goes on to say that Jim Marino tried to establish summer-stock theater in the original Mattituck Presbyterian Church building two years earlier but it didn’t occur. Then the building was offered to the NFCT. It had seats, lights and sets. The first play in the new theatre that has since become the permanent home of the NFCT was The Glass Menagerie.
The church allowed the group to use the building in return for insuring and maintaining it. The NFCT is made up of volunteer community residents who serve on its board of directors. Others serve as performers, directors, choreographers, stage crew, and everything in-between. All those involved become members of the NFCT and they receive a monthly newsletter along with fellow members. Four or five productions are put on a year and there are also play readings plus other special events. The summertime is capped off annually by a youth production. Ticket admission price is very reasonable for the wonderful productions that are brought to the stage.
