North Fork Woodworks building history
Southold Free Library's renovation is mightily assisted by "the-powers-that-be" from North Fork Woodworks!

By Danny McCarthy
WELL FOLKS: I’d like to go “write-on ahead” and share about a former Southold Main Road house that got “transferred” to the Southold North Road because the move did WORK!
You see ~ ‘Speaking First Class About the Post Office’
Joy Bear shared in a December 1983 Long Island Forum article that the Southold Post Office building had “many lives.” Originally in the 19th Century, a three-story Victorian home was owned by the Conklin family. The Southold Savings Bank, which became the Southold Free Library in {1927}, was positioned next door. Charles Karsten and his wife and family had moved into the Conklin home. The Karstens had bakery years in this house. “The Karsten Bakery was a main supplier to many North Fork people, merchants, shipyards and businesses.”
“Two upper floors of the original Conklin house were separated from the ground floor and the Karstens decided “to relocate them as a separate home at the rear of the one-story building.” The remaining floor became the United States Post Office in Southold. On June 18, 1971, Mrs. Loretta DiMaggio bought both the Post Office structure and the home behind it, through her corporation, Southold Equities, Inc.” “That property was moved to 810 Traveler Street just adjacent to the Feather Hill parking lot entrance and is also just down the road from the site of the present Southold Post Office.”
LET’S START AT SOME SORT OF THE VERY BEGINNING FOR THIS ACTUAL MOVE OF THE BUILDING …
In 1977: The actual two-story house was detoured on a May Tuesday morning. On The Road Again was east-west-bound traffic. There was no “shedding a little light on the subject” as the traffic lights were removed making way for what actually was a “traveling house.” That house was able to “bypass” under electric wires plus the home became a “home away from home-location” too since telephone cables actually had been able to be “moved” {so to speak!}. Those particular telephone cables I’m talking about had been taken down reaching the street pavement and “our building” was able to “be taken ‘write over them!’”
You have to understand that the house was formerly the property of s John Terp. That John Terp house was the house that was on the Southold Main Road and “rested just a bit BEHIND” the extreme side of what was then the Southold Savings Bank by Feather Hill {which became the Southold Free Library’s “SPOT!”
The “traveling house” was on its way to Traveler Street where it stayed as the property of Loretta DiMaggio.
According to the Suffolk Times dated October 8, 1981, we get a run-down about the Loretta DiMaggio House:
The story of the building starts nearly two centuries ago. The property, then owned by William Horton, was advantageously located near the town’s meeting house (known at that time as the First Church, Congregational or Society in Southold, and now as the Southold Presbyterian Church. On December 3, 1795, the lot was purchased by Ezra L’Hommedieu, William Albertson and 40 shareholders., for 50 shillings. planned to erect a school on it.
Soon a brick schoolhouse stood on the lot. From the Town records, we know quite a bit about this schoolhouse. It cost between and 80 and 100 pounds, with a gambrel roof and eight windows. Students sat at hand-hewn desks, upon log benches, and were warmed by a fireplaces and an iron stove
Teachers came and went. Wines Osborn was the first. Out of his {20-pound} salary{,} Austin VanScoy, another early teacher, became legendary for his discipline.
In 1884, the little red schoolhouse burned, and was rebuilt as a one-story edifice.
In 1870{,} the Southold Presbyterian Church, located across Main Road, bought the schoolhouse from the Town,
THE FORMER TERP LOT {“THANKSALATEE” AS I LIKE TO SAY!”} HAD BEEN “LIKE A SINGING GROUP” {A-CHOIR-ED} by the Southold Savings Bank since there had then become available parking space as the former house located on the property was “amongst the missing.” Well it wasn’t missing: It was merely re-located!
NOW AS I REMEMBER: THERE WAS A PAGANO’S PIZZERIA WHICH TOOK OVER WITHIN THE TERP/DIMAGGGIO BUILDING THAT WAS PRIOR BARBARA & LUCILLE’s OWNED B. L. SCOOPS - AND THEN TO THE RE-LOCATION TO THE NORTH ROAD WHERE NORTH FORK WOODWORKS IS NOW!
Pagano's Pizza ALSO took over Bob Sayer’s Garage on Main Rd., Southold.

The Suffolk Times dated September 2, 2011 had this headline:
Southold Pagano’s Closes; Pizzeria Opens at Greenport Location
Father and son Pagano decide to turn one section of that Little Italian Place into a pizzeria – that was by Patch Staff member Erin Schultz
“This past Saturday was the last day of service at Pagano's — a longstanding place for pizza and other Italian cuisine in downtown Southold. After 13 years on Route 25, the owners have decided to close up shop in search of a new location in the hamlet.”
“Pagano's in Southold served everything from pizza, heros and calzones to full pasta, veal and seafood dishes. Joe Pagano Jr., who has always been in business with his father, said they would have to pay significantly higher rent in order to stay in Southold over the next 10 years.”
JUST FOR THE SAKE OF IT FOLKS: PAGANO’S PIZZERIA IS ON THE NORTH ROAD IN SOUTHOLD:

NOW! Supposedly Pagano’s That Little Italian Place located at 110 Front Street in Greenport is now Cotton Caper.
IS THERE MORE NEWS? “YOU BET {!!}”
The Long Island Traveler-Watchman dated December 6, 2001 “carried” the Kelly Q. Bruer article titled: Don’t Bet On It!
That article spotlighted the fact that then Southold North Road Loretta DiMaggio house was scheduling to offer a casino within the building. … “We have our certified mail receipt indicating that New York State accepted our application for our compact,” said Loretta DiMaggio.
{“On the state level, according to the 1988 Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, for there to be any gaming other than bingo-type games, the tribal leaders must form a compact with the state.”}
Dan's Papers article dated June 25, 2005 was titled ~ Casino Opens, Closes - The First Indian Gambling Casino On The East End (on Traveler Street, Southold) Is Raided – {AND WAS SHUT DOWN!}
