SHELTER ISLAND, NY — The plight of two dolphins tugged at the public's hearts on Shelter Island recently — and two officers braved poor weather conditions to check on them.

On July 25, two New York State Department of Environmental Conservation police officers set out despite high winds and rough seas to assist New York Marine Rescue in locating and assessing the two dolphins near Shelter Island, the DEC said.

According to officials, a concerned boater called a hotline to report the two dolphins, which were swimming in a mooring field. The dolphins were located using a patrol boat and the biologist was able to observe the dolphins and document their activity, the DEC said.
