In The Brooklyn Daily Eagle dated 27 Jan 1924 {stet} there happens to be an article by Helen Appleton Read titled "Picasso. Who Started Cubism, Returns to the Art Conservative" in which "One day, noting the way the light fell on the simple planes of a negro statuette so that the figure's head was divided into clearly defined cubes of silver light and brown shadow, Picasso evolved the theory of cubism....
... Picasso played with the idea and developed a system of cubist shapes. ...
... The latest idea is of course {is} classicism and a beauty dependent on line-fortunately for most of us who need our art in concrete terms-the line of the human face and figure. ... He has taught {the present generation of the 1970s} to be aware of any accidental effects and of pretty color. {To} {p}onder every brush stroke, -{&}- let every stroke be definitely constructed!"
The July 17, 1932 The Brooklyn Daily Eagle included an article by Guy Hickok titled "He Keeps the Art Boys Guessing -{~}- Picasso, God of the Moderns, Draws Like Anybody, Only Better -{~}- He Ignores the Snobism of His Vogue And Sneaks Out to Movies"

The first one I come to." {PABLO PICASSO told Guy Hickock during a Paris art gallery set-up for a Picasso exhibition that PABLO PICASSO was organizing write-in-front of Guy Hickok.} Guy Hickok continued: "When he wants to{,} Picasso can draw like anybody, only better. The dates on his canvasses show that he abandoned his 'isms' every now and then through the whole 30 years, just to paint a picture. But most of the time he tried to keep the art boys guessing.
