Pit Bull Attack On Shelter Island; Mother, Daughter Injured: PD

The pit bull attack took place Sunday on Shelter Island, police say.

SHELTER ISLAND, NY — A pit bull attack on Shelter Island Sunday left a mother and daughter injured, police said.

According to Shelter Island Police, the incident took place at 7:42 p.m. when an unleashed pit bull attacked a mother and daughter from Shelter Island who were walking their own small dogs, on leashes, on a town road in the Hay Beach section of town.

The 17-year-old girl and her mother were both injured, one seriously, and transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport for treatment, police said.

It was not immediately clear if the two small dogs were injured.

The Shelter Island Town Police Department, along with the town's animal control officer and the town attorney's office, are investigating the incident, police said.

The pit bull's owner will be issued summonses for two town code violations, "biting dog," and "dog running at large", police said. A dangerous dog hearing and proceeding will be requested by the town attorney's office to determine the disposition of the pit bull, which is currently impounded, police said.
