Police: Good Samaritan Rescues Two Teens After Kayaks Flip Over in Long Island Sound

The two boys were hospitalized for minor hypothermia.

A local good Samaritan rescued two teens after their kayaks flipped over on the Long Island Sound off of Greenport on Sunday afternoon, according to Southold Town Police.

Police received a report of two kayakers in distress shortly before 5 p.m.

Southold Bay Constables and police officers as well as Southold and Greenport Rescue responded.

The two boys, both 16 years old, one from Melville and one from Straudsburg, Pennsylvania, flipped out of their kayaks and were not able to get back on board, according to police.

Paul Hashagen, 55 of Freeport, saw the situation and launched his own kayak, police said.

He was able to tie the two kayaks to his own while the two boys were holding onto them and paddle safely to shore, police said.

The two boys were transported by Greenport Rescue to Eastern Long Island Hospital for treatment of minor hypothermia, police said.
