In heartbreaking news, Lorraine Haeg died with her fiance on the night before what would have been her daughter Kim's 38th birthday.

GREENPORT, NY — Southold Town police have identified two people who died in a Greenport crash Tuesday night as Lorraine Haeg, 74, of Southold and Anthony Gallo, 62.

The collision involved a Hampton Jitney bus driven by Jeanluc Gayott, Jr., 52, of Port Jefferson, and a motorcycle driven by Gallo; Haeg was a passenger on the motorcycle with Gallo, police said.

Tragically, Lorraine Haeg, who lost her daughter Kim three months ago — Kim was hurt in a crash in 2004 that left her a quadriplegic on a ventilator — died in the crash just hours before what would have been Kim's 38th birthday Wednesday.

The North Fork community was cloaked in grief at the unthinkable news. "So sorry for your heartbreaking loss," one woman wrote on Facebook, a sentiment issued by many others.

Dennis Haeg, Kim's father, who said he was in shock at the news, wrote on Facebook: "RIP, Anthony and Lorraine." And then, "Happy Birthday, Kim. Give Anthony and Lorraine a hug for me."

The community has come together in the 20 years since Kim's accident, working together to build an addition on the house she shared with Lorraine, so that Kim could come home to her mother. And in the years since, Lorraine cared for her daughter with fierce love and dedication.

"At least Lorraine is with her daughter now," Joyce Grigonis told Patch, mourning her loss and echoing a thought many shared on social media. "I’m sure they are together now, both restored and walking together."
