Police: Mattituck-Cutchogue School Board Member Fired Gun During Dispute

The incident occurred during a "landlord tenant dispute," Friday night, police say.

A Mattituck man who serves on the Mattituck-Cutchogue School Board was arrested after he pointed and fired a shotgun at another person on Friday night, Southold Town Police said.

Douglas Cooper, 67, shot the weapon during a “landlord tenant dispute” on Breakwater Road shortly before 10 p.m., according to police.

He was charged with menacing, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

Cooper was released on $250 bail and told Newsday: “I did not and would not shoot at anyone. I was shooting in the air to scare the deer out. The tenant should not have felt that I was shooting at him.”
