School Vote 2019: North Fork Budgets, BOE Candidates

Here's what you need to know before you head out to vote on Tuesday.

NORTH FORK, NY — Residents on the North Fork will vote on the proposed budgets for the 2019-2020 school year on Tuesday, May 21.

At both the Southold and Greenport school districts, shared Superintendent David Gamberg said both districts are under the tax cap, a "major goal," presenting responsible budgets that maintains programs and services in both districts.

In Greenport, voters will weigh in on the district's $19,426,000 proposed budget.

The proposal calls for a 2.04 percent increase in spending over the current year and the tax levy increase is 2.85 percent, which is within the tax levy cap.

"A good budget, as former Treasurer Secretary Jack Lew said, 'Is not just a collection of numbers, but an expression of our values and aspirations,'" said Gamberg.

Sharing administrative costs with Southold, he said, saves Greenport taxpayers more than $250,000 per year.

Sandra Martocchia and Kim Moore Swann are running unopposed to fill two open Board of Education seats.

Polls will be open from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the district's "Dude" Manwaring gymnasium.

Southold Union Free School District

In Southold, voters will weigh in on the district's $30,603,000 proposed budget.

The proposal calls for a 2.07 percent increase in spending over the current year and the tax levy increase is 2.97 percent, which is within the tax levy cap.

The budget calls for an additional security guard at the elementary school.

Incumbent Judi Fouchet is running unopposed to fill one open Board of Education seat.
Polls will be open from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Southold Junior Senior High School gymnasium.

Mattituck-Cutchogue Union Free School District

In the Mattituck-Cutchogue Union Free School District, voters will weigh in on the district's $40,784,048 proposed budget.

The proposal calls for a 0.26 percent increase in spending over the current year and the tax levy increase is 1.9 percent, which is within the tax levy cap.

Voters will cast ballots on propositions including permission to spent $1.960,000 from the capital reserve fund for security upgrades and air-conditioning; as well as $1,600,000 from the capital reserve fund for a turf field.

Three candidates are vying for two open Board of Education seats, including incumbent Sarah Hassildine, as well as Jennifer Anderson and George Haase.

Polls will be open from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Mattituck High School gym.
